Martin Luther, the sixteenth century German Reformer, set in motion a revolution that forever changed the religious landscape of the West. From his critique and recommended reforms of the penitential and sacramental system of the medieval Church, to his innovative and constructive vision of the cross of Jesus Christ and the justification of the sinner as the center of the gospel message, Luther's work had enormous impact, not only on the society of his time but into the present day. Luther's religious and social revolution set a course for understanding anew what it means to be a Christian in light of the radical message of the gospel, and how that message unleashes a radical freedom for new life.

For decades, Fortress Press has been one of the chief providers of access to Luther's works in English, as co-publisher of the critical American Edition of Luther's Works; as well, Fortress has made accessible to readers and students handy, single volume editions of many primary source texts of Luther (e.g., Three TreatisesFreedom of a ChristianOn Christian Liberty), alongside the much used and heralded anthology, Martin Luther's Basic Theological Writings. To this treasured set of resources, Fortress is proud to provide new key resources for the study and interpretation of Luther's thought in the Annotated Luther series.

In addition, Fortress is the premiere publisher of several biographies of Luther and provides as well as crucial texts in the critical secondary tasks of introduction, assessment, and interpretation of Luther's work (The Theology of Martin LutherMartin Luther, the Bible, and the Jewish People), life (Luther the Reformer) and significance to the wider theological tradition (Dominus Mortis). Fortress also offers pivotal resources and texts for studying and understanding the documents, context, and history of the Lutheran and Reformed traditions as they developed and evolved in the wake of Luther's contribution (e.g., A Reformation Reader; The Lutheran ConfessionsThe Reformation and the Modern ChurchJohannes BugenhagenThe Honeycomb Scroll). With these, Fortress continues its commitment as the vanguard source for Luther studies and a primary contributor for students and readers engaged in conversation around Luther's dynamic legacy.
