Aside from the fact that it is perhaps the single most discussed and controversial theological writing of the century, no one knowledgeable of Bultmann's work could doubt its basic importance for his entire contribution. Although the position is for which it argues was hardly new, having already taken shape in several of his theological essays written during the 1920s, it is nevertheless the classic formulation of this position and as such incomparable in the Bultmann corpus.

Excerpts

Here, as in none of Bultmann's previously published writings, he reflects on the nature of theology itself as in its own way properly a science, thereby clarifying the methodological foundations of his whole theological approach.

Preface

Editor and translator Schubert M. Odgen describes some of the essays contained in this collection:
  • On the essay "New Testament and Mythology": Aside from the fact that it is perhaps the single most discussed and controversial theological writing of the century, no one knowledgeable of Bultmann's work could doubt its basic importance for his entire contribution. Although the position for which it argues was hardly new, having already taken shape in several of his theological essays written during the 1920s, it is nevertheless the classic formulation of this position and as such incomparable in the Bultmann corpus.
  • On the essay "The Problem of Demythologizing": Next to "New Testament and Mythology" itself, none of Bultmann's writings is more important for clarifying what he does and does not mean by "myth" and "demythologizing" or for establishing existential interpretation as the appropriate hermeneutical principal for Christian theology.
  • On the essay "The Problem of Hermeneutics": By directly addressing the most fundamental problem that his demand for demythologizing raises, at once surveying the modern history of the problem and proposing a constructive solution to it, this writing also shares fully in the basic importance of the programmatic essay.
  • On the essay "Theology as Science": Here, as in none of Bultmann's previously published writings, he reflects on the nature of theology itself as in its own way properly a science, thereby clarifying the methodological foundations of his whole theological approach.
